Written by Blair Clay
This book was kind of so interesting to read even though this book is written in English. Many books that I should have to read were so hard so I chose a book which I don’t need to understand whole sentences, which means I already have a lot of background knowledge about that book’s story. That’s why I was reading this the forgotten war by Blair Clay. This book shows almost everything about Korean war as a view of American veteran went to Korean war. Korean War, when I was in Korea, it is a huge giant impact with everything in our society. It involved with everything, such as politics, economy, and the way of people’s thinking. Just like a usual fact like United States of America is the most powerful nation in the world, and their people feel it during their life, Korean war is our part of life in there. That’s why I actually couldn’t understand that much about why world history, especially American history and historians named this harsh war as a ‘forgotten’ war. This book told me why. Korean war is very very important for a lot of reasons, and textbook keep saying that as a forgotten war. This author also told to readers that forgotten war means a lot of things, such as some kind of people really wanted to hide this war and their information to next generation for a purpose. So while I was reading this book, I could figure it out. Author said ‘the painful scar of Cold war made this war as a forgotten war’ and I’m pretty much sure about that sentence representative his point of view and his personal opinion In this war, which means a lot of things in that sentence. This book also showed that how Korean war was dangerous enough to make another huge world war right after World war 2. If you read this book, you can simplify that WW2 was a war fought against imperialists, so most of you can say that Nazi and Japanese empire were evil at that time. But in Korean war, things were totally different. There was no fight for justice and freedom. They fought for their own ideology. It was time of Cold war. This war wasn’t only between North and South Korea, but also the entire whole world. 97 nations came to Korean peninsula to fight and support their side, which means their ideology. Communism and Capitalism. 84 nations with South Korea, and United states, representative capitalism, 13 nations with North Korea, Soviet and China representative communism. Almost 15 million people got killed from this war for 3 years. Yes, the book also told that, this war can’t be forgotten from people’s memory. It is ridiculous. How could people forget about this war? Author gave a answer key at the end of the book. Some people, really wanted to hide from this war after Korean war. “America in Korea” , “Russia and China in Korea”. It’s the scar of Cold war, and it means this Cold war’s work is still going on earth, like you can see that only one divided nation in the world. It was nice book.
In what ways do the events in the book reveal evidences of the author’s world view?
He used a view of American veteran who just came from Korean War. He used his own point of view, but I think it was pretty much based on American & South Korean’s side at that time.
Did certain part of the book make you uncomfortable~ ?
He made some serious mistakes that described communism and socialism as just a evil kind like Nazi and Japanese at WW2. That was very stupid, and made me feel sick whole time. It doesn’t mean I like them, but it is stupid.
